Illawarra Consumers in the doldrums
23 May 2019
The latest IRIS Research Consumer Sentiment Monitor shows that Illawarra consumer caution continues: the Illawarra Consumer Sentiment Index has declined 2 pts to 82 pts since the March 2018 quarter. Over the same period Westpac’s Australian Consumer Sentiment Index fell 4 pts to 99 pts.
Perceptions of household financial position continue to worsen with the Current Financial Position Index falling 10 pts to 91 pts while the Future Financial Position Index was down 4 pts to 98 pts – so not an optimistic outlook overall.
Despite negative perceptions of household financial position, we continue to spend more than planned across most categories measured, with an increased reliance on credit to facilitate this consumption, again matching national trends in terms of record high household debt levels.
